Product history
Arne Jacobsen created the AJ lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Collection) in 1957. Today, the AJ series is regarded as the design for which the Danish architect is best known around the world. At the time, the AJ series included a table lamp and a floor lamp, as well as a wall lamp and a small table lamp created to be fixed to the table. The wall lamp was present, arranged in magnificent rows, in the stainless steel version in the hotel lobby when it opened in 1960. Together with the AJ Royal pendant, the AJ lamp was part of the overall design concept created by Jacobsen for the hotel. Jacobsen not only designed the hotel down to the last detail for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), but he also contributed to the design of almost all the original furnishings and service accessories. The profile of the AJ lamp with its straight lines and the combination of right and oblique angles is not only seen as a formal parallel to the profile of the 3300 Series seats, but also to the geometric profiles of its buildings. The AJ lamp was used in different parts of the hotel, in copper and stainless steel versions. It was also originally available in light gray, dark brown and black like the AJ suspension. Over the years, however, new colors have been introduced to celebrate the series' anniversaries. In 2020, the 60th anniversary of the opening of the SAS Royal Hotel will be celebrated with the reintroduction of the AJ Table Mini particularly suitable for the home, on a windowsill, or on a bedside table or combined with other furnishings. All versions of the AJ lamp will be reintroduced in the original stainless steel version that reflects the surrounding environments in the spirit of Arne Jacobsen, highlighting the minimalist and distinctive shape of the lamp and the perfect light emission.
